About this event
About
Since June 6th 2020, we’ve run 90 cleanups at Manly Cove. In the 25 months of running these events we’ve been joined by more than 1,680 volunteers, with more than 80% of those participating at least 3 times.
Together, we removed 800kgs+ of litter from the beach, surface and ocean floor. Our top 6 categories of counted litter include food, beverage, smoking, personal care and construction items. Microplastics and unidentifiable clear soft plastics are also found in large quantities but they are weighed and discarded since the data would be impossible to action in our community.
At the end of every cleanup we sort, count and record the total number of litter items found.
We do this to inform ourselves on which items are of greatest concern, so that action can be targeted in the community. We aim to stop plastic pollution in our local area at the source, which is why we take our data collection so seriously!
