About this event

2025 Youth Week Event – We are the future and the future is now.

Current issues around food security and reliable food supply chains are an increasing concern. Having skills and knowledge to create fertile soil to grow a range of fruits, vegetables and greens allows us to live a more sustainable existence. Eating home grown produce means less reliance on food transported from faraway places.

Composting and worm farming are a great way to redirect food scraps from tips. Creating organic material from food scraps is a great addition to the soil and supports the growth of edible plants through their lifecycle.

In this session, we will tour the food forest bush tucker garden and look at the layers and principles of a food forest system. We will learn essential skills to maintain a food forest including how to compost and worm farm, germinating seeds and adding organic materials to support plant growth. To end the session, we will plant native shrubs that will grow into the future providing habitat and food for native fauna.

To end the session, we will plant a native shrub that will grow into the future providing habitat and food for native fauna.

The Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets, set across 123 hectares of unique urban bushland and home to two endangered ecological communities as well as 18 threatened species of flora and fauna. The Wildflower Garden is open to the public all year round and has a range of hikes, step-free walking tracks, picnic areas and heritage venue hire as well as a diverse calendar of environmental education programs.
