About this event

Kickstart your journey in science.

Do you have burning questions about the natural world around you? Ever wondered what creatures live in your backyard, school garden, or local park — and why? This hands-on science challenge invites curious kids to think like scientists, get outdoors, and explore the answers for themselves. Suitable for primary-aged children but older children are also welcome to join in the fun, no lab coat required!

In honour of National Science Week (August 9-17), this event celebrates the power of everyday observation and encourages kids to become citizen scientists in their own neighbourhoods.

This activity runs across two sessions and it’s important to attend both to complete your project.

Session 1 (Wednesday 6 August, 4-5pm)

Kick off your experiment! You’ll discover how to design a simple investigation and borrow a ‘portable lab’ science kit filled with helpful tools to get you started. But don’t stop there — you’re encouraged to get creative and use everyday items to experiment in your own unique way. You can conduct your investigation in your backyard, on your balcony, at your local park, or even at your school. Spend as little as five minutes a day — before or after school, during lunch, or on the weekend — whenever it suits you!

Session 2 (Wednesday 20 August, 4-5pm)

Time to showcase your findings! Share your experiment, results, interesting discoveries, or even the unexpected moments you experienced along the way. You can bring along photos, drawings, videos or other creative displays — and you’ll go in the running to win a prize for your efforts!
