Community Planting for National Tree Day

We’re celebrating National Tree Day by planting underneath our trees. Understory is as crucial as canopy to make sure there is somewhere for animals to forage, to hide from predators, and to nest.

We’ll be planting 5000 native grasses, herbs and wildflowers. Our native insects often have associations with particular grasses, so by planting these we can support our bees and butterflies, improve pollination services and bring in food for little birds.

Sydney Park has seen a lot of different lives – from a forest of turpentine and ironbark trees, a kangaroo hunting ground, to brickmaking and municipal waste. Since becoming a regional park in 1991, the variety of plantings have made it now one of the most biodiverse places in the City.

Our community planting will start at 10am and finish once everything is planted or by midday.

This is a family-friendly event and parents must supervise their children at all times.

We recommend using public transport as there’s limited parking in the area. Please wear enclosed shoes and dress sun safe. We recommend trousers, hats and long sleeves.

Bring your own water bottle and gardening gloves if you have them. Fruit and water will be available.
