About this event

Welcome to #SeaToSource, a project powered by Conservation Volunteers Australia and supported locally by BMA Hay Point Services, aimed at empowering individuals and communities to take action on one of the world’s most solvable environmental issues – ocean litter.

Conservation Volunteers Australia are reducing marine debris in the Mackay region, and engaging with the local community to raise awareness on ocean litter and ocean health. By facilitating monthly clean-up events we are able to connect our community members to local marine environments and encourage positive environmental behaviors.

The behavioral changes our project encourages will promote a focus on ocean health in the Mackay region. In Mackay, we are committed to engaging and educating our younger generations through facilitating school excursions and educational activities. By instilling ocean health awareness and environmentally conscious behaviors in our younger generations, we are safeguarding the health of our oceans well into the future.

Additionally, Conservation Volunteers conduct quarterly litter monitoring in the Mackay Region, which contributes to the CSIRO’s Australia wide data. Our data contribution provides a detailed overview of ocean litter, and allows us to understand trends in pollution. With this information we are able to tackle the problem at the source, and work with community members and organisations to reduce the materials that are contributing to marine pollution.

In Mackay Conservation Volunteers Australia are members of the Local Marine Advisory Committee and Healthy Rivers to Reef Partnership, this allows us to communicate our findings to local groups, who are proactive in working together to find solutions to issues effecting our oceans.

#SeaToSource Mackay has been established to spread awareness on ocean litter, and involve the community in preventing litter from entering our oceans; as well as encouraging behaviors that will positively impact the health of our oceans well into the future.
