About this event

Permaculture Kids Gardening School (9 week term)

$140 per term first child, $100 per term each subsequent child from same family.

Age range- 5 years to 15 years

Friday class dates- 2nd Feb, 9th Feb, 16th Feb, 23rd Feb, 8th Mar, 15th Mar, 22nd March (10am-12pm)

Week 1

  • Micro climates. We will learn about micro climates and how we can use them to get a head start on the growing season. We will sew seeds for our winter crops.
  • Feed and water chickens, ducks & goats, collect eggs
  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden
  • Free play

Week 2

  • Preserving the harvest. As our summer crops come to an end we will learn ways of preserving our crops to last throughout the year. We will make jars of pickled vegetable to take home.
  • Feed and water chickens, ducks & goats, collect eggs.
  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden.
  • Free play

Week 3

  • Soil and Mulch. As the season changes and we prepare to plant our winter crops, the soil needs some love and care. We will learn how to put nutrients back into the soil and the importance of mulch. We will fertilise the soil and place a layer of mulch down.
  • Feed and water chickens, ducks & goats, collect eggs
  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden

Week 4

  • Planning Our Winter Garden. We we learn how to plan a winter garden to ensure enough food is grown to feed our families. We will learn about companion, succession and staggered planting techniques. We will map out and plan our winter garden.
  • Feed and water chickens, ducks and goats, collect eggs
  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden
  • Free play

Week 5

Winter seedlings. We will learn what plants grow best in winter and why. We will plant out our winter crops in accordance with our garden map we made in week 4

Week 6

  • Animal Care. We will learn about the needs and care of our chickens, ducks and goats. We will make some herbal/medicinal snacks to feed the animals, brush the goats and put fresh bedding in the nesting boxes for the chickens and ducks.

  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden

Week 7

  • Shopping and cooking from the garden. For our last lesson of the term we get to feast on all our hard work, by harvesting food from our garden to cook and eat. We will harvest vegetables and eggs from the garden and make a frittata to share. We may even get to toast marshmallows on the campfire if the weather permits.
  • Feed and water chickens, ducks and goats, collect eggs.
  • Carry out weekly garden chores to maintain the garden

In case of wet weather-

We will have under cover wet weather activities organised

In case of severe weather-

Such as- extreme heat, dangerous storms etc.. Classes may get canceled in the interest of the health and safety of the children. If available,at the discretion of the organiser, a makeup class may be offered in this instance.
