About this event

Bayside Council acknowledges the Bidjigal Clan, the traditional owners of the land on which we meet and work, and acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. Bayside Council pays respects to Elders past and present.

Celebrate World Environment Day by joining us for an exciting adventure exploring the wonders of the wetlands within the Bayside local area! This in-person event is perfect for nature enthusiasts.

Wetland environments are one of Bayside Council’s most important ecosystems. Beyond providing important ecological functions that support remnant bushlands and wildlife, these wetlands hold fascinating historical significance, including being home to one of Australia’s most famous Aboriginal resistance fighters Pemulway.

Join us for a guided wetland bus tour led by local environmentalist and historian Dr Arthur White and staff from Bayside Council’s Environment & Resilience team.

Seats on the bus are limitted so registration is essesntial!

Dates:

  • Wednesday, 4th June
  • Saturday 7th June

Time: 10AM – 1 PM (3-hours)

Location: Outside Rockdale Library, near the carpark (meeting point).

We will explore and learn about:

  • Eve Street Wetland, home of the endangered Green and Golden Bell frog and the heritage-listed 1890s Southern and Western Ocean Outfall System,
  • Landing Lights Wetland, important to various migrating and local birds,
  • Patmore Swamp, hiding place of indigenous freedom fighter Pemulwuy,
  • Hawthorne Street Natural Area, listed by the State Government as an Endangered Ecological Community.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the importance of wetland conservation!

What to bring:

  • Water bottle
  • A hat
  • Sunscreen
  • The tour includes an approximately 500-metre walk through the Hawthorne Street Natural Area, so please wear appropriate walking shoes.

Please note: The tour is not suitable for children under 8.

In the event of rain on the day, please check your email for an update or call 0476 430 932 to see if the event is still going ahead. The tour bus will depart from Rockdale at 10:00am, with stops at four locations, and returning to Rockdale upon completion of the tour.

Grab your boots and binos and get ready for a memorable experience!
